Three nationally recognized law firms Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; and Phillips, Nizer, Benjamin, Krim & Ballon were patrons of the event, along with AT&T and the United Food and Commercial Workers. The three firms are the first law firms ever to sponsor a fundraiser by a gay rights organization.

Serving as hosts for the evening were David Dinkins, Harvey Fierstein, Virginia Apuzzo, David Leavitt, Marlo Thomas, Phil Donahue, Tony Randall, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Peabody, and Gloria Steinem, who presented the award to Schwarz.

"The breadth of sponsorship of this event demonstrates the mounting support in this country for full civil rights for lesbians and gay men," stated Thomas B. Stoddard, Lambda's Executive Director. "This recognition of the urgency of our cause comes at a critical time for the gay community, as AIDSrelated discrimination continues to grow and the community as a whole comes under ever more powerful attack.

"We hope that the example set by our sponsors will result in greater support from others for our work to fight discrimination," he said.

Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund is the nation's oldest and largest legal organization dedicated to the civil rights of lesbians and gay men. Founded in 1973, it has its headquarters in New York and engages in test-case litigation around the country. Lambda brought and won the first AIDS-related discrimination suit in the United States in 1983,

Speaking at the sixth annual Lesbian and Gay Health Conference in Los Angeles on March 27th, Rep. Tony Coelho of California, Majority Whip in the House, and Duke Comegys, national co-chair of the Campaign Fund, both called for a Manhattan Project approach to AIDS as the only level of national commitment strong enough to achieve victory against the virus.

"There's broad bi-partisan support," said Coelho, "for a non-political national commisthat would coordinate Federal research, education and prevention activities, and also override existing bureaucratic roadblocks."

Coelho cited the 1940's Manhattan Project as the model for such a commission. The original Manhattan Project was instituted to ensure American victory in the race to develop an atomic bomb.

"It had all the resources, brains and power necessary to overcome the never ending delays of our bureaucracy," said Comegys in his speech to the Conference, following his acceptance of a Community Service Award presented by the Health Foundation. "The task of this agency will be to speed up research and drug trials and override the built-in slowness of the existing bureaucracy so that we can hasten the discovery of a cure," he said.

To mobilize greater Congressional support for the commission and for other AIDSrelated legislation, Comegys announced at
